The 3-Bridge Project named ”Construction of 3rd Buriganga, 2nd Shitalakhya & Teesta Bridge” was approved by ECNEC under KFAED assistance in October 2003 with the total project cost of Taka 265.02 crore.
The project consists construction of :
1.The 3rd Buriganga Bridge at Basila under Mohammadpur Thana over river Buriganga. 2.2nd Shitalakhya Bridge at Demra over river Shitalakhya. 3.Teesta Bridge in Rangpur at 21st KM on Rangpur-Kurigram Road over Teesta River (near the existing old Railway-cum-Road Bridge). The Length & cost of the Bridge are :
1.3rd Buriganga Bridge : Length- 708.00 meter, Cost Tk. 78.44 crore. 2.2nd Shitalakhya Bridge : Length-1072.00 meter, Cost Tk. 83.23 crore. 3.Teesta Bridge : Length- 750.00 meter, Cost Tk. 103.35 crore.
The total estimated cost of the above three Bridges (as per PP) is Tk. 265.02 crore, out of which Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development (KFAED) has agreed to contribute a loan of 8.60 million KD equivalent to Tk 172.00 crore and rest Tk 93.02 crore will be financed by Government of Bangladesh. Tenders have been called for construction of the above bridges. Tenders are in the process of approval. It is expected that physical work may be started during 2005-2006 FY. The estimated time for completion of the Project is 3 years. Construction of 3rd Burigonga Bridge on the south western side of Dhaka city will help extension of the city. The west bank of Burigonga River will be development as an industrial belt and Dhaka city will have an added connection with South Bengal existing road network. Construction of 2nd Sitalakhya bridge on south eastern side of Dhaka city will help extension of the city also. The east bank of Sitalakhya river will be developed as an industrial area and Dhaka city will be added connected with east and north-east part of the country through existing road network. It will reduce the traffic congesting at Sitalakhya Bridge-1 (Kanchpur Bridge). Construction of Teesta Bridge will connect Rangpur District with Lalmonirhat & Kurigram district of Rajshahi Division. As a result Lalmonirhat and Kurigram district will be connected directly with Dhaka city and rest of the country through this bridge. After completion of the project the agricultural and industrial products of the local area will be easily transported to Dhaka City & rest of the country. As a result socioeconomic development of the area will be improved.
